Bountiful containers

We marked the full arrival of spring today by planting several pots of vegetables and herbs. We still have two pots of last year's strawberries, which just blossomed and seem poised to bear fruit. After several trips to the nursery of the local OSH, we planted one large pot of red beets (mommy's favorite vegetable of late), as well as parsley, radishes, carrots, mesclun, butter lettuce, and kale; tomorrow we'll finish with some tomatoes.
Except for the tomatoes, for which we chickened out and bought seedlings, we are growing the rest from seeds. Sava insisted on planting the seeds himself (which is probably why we will end up with clusters of things rather than evenly spaced plants) and, even though he tends not to like to get his hands too "dirty," I encouraged him to touch the soil as we were putting the seeds in.
For my part, I fantasize about living in a place some day where I can spend much of my summer gardening and cooking our own vegetables--in my own garden. My Missoula friends--all significantly older--used to tell me that gardening is a mental state that takes over some people with age, and I can definitely attest to that. I am known to have said in my early twenties that I never wanted to have children. Now the two little buggers are my life. Something similar seems to be happening with gardening.
