It's been three or four months since Sava started attending an afternoon preschool program, first with me present, now all alone for almost two hours, and quite happy. We are relieved to see him adjusting to the idea of school and even liking it.
Today as we were driving back home from school, and after a series of questions from me about what he had done there, he said in a serious voice: "Sometimes children take toys away from me." I sat in stunned silence for about ten seconds, as I tried to process the fact that he had just made a general statement which he seemed to have gleaned from more than a single experience. He is 2 yrs 9 mos old. I told him that some children don't know yet how to share their toys, but they will learn, and he is being a very nice boy to share his toys with them, since he already knows how to do it. He reminded me that we had just read a book about this, one of our current favorites in a series about Tom and his friend Pippo (a stuffed monkey), by Helen Oxenbury.
It doesn't cease to amaze me that in the brief space of less than three years we have gone from having a small helpless blob in our hands to sharing life with a thinking feeling creature who seems more alive to the world than the two of us combined.
