And speaking of books, might as well mention another favorite for the annals of posterity. This is Peter Sis' Fire Truck, which is one in a series of books about vehicles. In this tiny volume, a little boy named Matt likes fire trucks so much that one morning he wakes up as a fire truck himself. After cruising around his house, putting out fires and rescuing teddy bears, he follows a smell to the kitchen which leads him to a breakfast of pancakes. The second page of this books says that "the first thing he said in the morning was fire truck," and Sava loves it when I read that sentence and make a pause after "was" to allow him to say "fire truck!" He melts into a big wide grin whenever we do it, which in turn warms my heart.
"And he to me: ' This mountain's of such sort
that climbing it is hardest at the start;
but as we rise, the slope grows less unkind.
Therefore, when this slope seems to you so gentle
that climbing farther up will be as restful
as traveling downstream by boat, you will
be where this pathway ends, and there you can
expect to put your weariness to rest.
I say no more, and this I know as truth.'"
Dante, Purgatorio IV.88-96
