On the occasion of Mother's Day this weekend, a recommendation from this mom for two things that have touched me deeply in the past two weeks:
*** One of my favorite public radio talk shows, Forum, on the Bay Area's KQED with our own Michael Krasny, aired an an interview with David Isay, the founder of Storycorps. Isay has recently published a book about mothers, drawing on the stories between and about family members recorded by Storycorps, and the Forum interview offers a sampling of those stories. I am notorious for not crying easily--and often laughing my way through sappy movies--but I challenge anyone to stay dry while listening to this one-hour show. It is beautiful, sad, and uplifting. Get a box of tissues before you start.
*** Also overheard on NPR, Natalie Merchant has a new album, "Leave your Sleep," which I requested for Mother's Day, received early, and have already listened to a couple of times. Natalie Merchant researched and collected about two dozen poems about childhood and motherhood, which she set to music according to the culture and time period from which they came. It is an exquisite collection of music and--for the literature lover--a genuine revelation about the innate musicality of language. Read more about the album here.
