Blueberries for Sal

It has made me so happy to see Sava enjoy this book. A classic for reasons that I intuitively understand but find hard to articulate, it tells the story of little Sal going blueberry picking with her mom on one side of Blueberry Hill, while on the other side a bear and her cub are doing the same thing. Little Sal and the cub get their mothers mixed up, then sort them out, and in the process each child eats a lot of blueberries. The drawings are simple--blue and white--and the text is not rhymed, but the overall effect is magical. Sava loves the part about blueberries saying "kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk" when they first go in the metal pail, and he also likes the idea of the mothers and children getting mixed up, then finding where they belong. I can read that book to him over and over again all day long without getting tired, and there have been a few days when it seemed that this was what he most wanted to do, too.
