Last two months have been too hard to write about. Sava underwent treatment at a feeding clinic, where he learned to eat from a spoon, for the first time in his life. I am finally off the pump, and he eats four solid meals a day. Eating is still a struggle for him, and we finally have to admit that he will never be the happy, enthusiastic eater that some babies are just born to be--at least not while he is still a baby, which he almost isn't anymore. Once he becomes older, I hope he'll rediscover food.
The therapy taught us to act with confidence as parents, even when confident is the lats thing we feel. If we don't believe that Sava is going to finish a meal, then apparently he isn't going to finish. If we don't set the rhythm of his day, scheduling meals and sleep, then apparently he won't eat enough and won't grow properly. We're learning to extend those lessons to the rest of our lives as well. We are also learning that for him at least, learning often takes place through crying. For four nights in a row, he screams through having his teeth brushed. On the fifth, he is suddenly fine with it. He cries the first few times I take a toy away from him when he goes down for a nap. Then one day, he just hands me the toy quietly when I ask for it.
