Last year's Sierra Club family service trip left a lasting impression on all of us. There was the part where we contributed to an organization whose purpose we believe in. There was the part where we met the wonderfully inspiring leaders of the trip. There was also the part of exposing our kids to disadvantaged inner-city students, which felt like making a slight puncture in their otherwise extraordinarily sheltered existence. Last but not least, there was the part of roughing it--not quite--in a beautiful part of our breathtakingly glorious state. So, this year we went back for more. Tom was there to provide the element of familiarity, and we also met new adults and kids from Chicago, Denver, and the Bronx. We built Adirondack chairs and benches, leveled ground for a volleyball court, planted flowers, painted decks and bed boards, washed dishes, and enjoyed the fresh air of the high Sierra.
