Spring 18: Everything Else

Besides the memorable Spring Break trip to Joshua Tree and Palm Springs, here are other small tidbits that happened (and many more that, in my chronic exhaustion, I must have surely forgotten to photograph).
Sava turned twelve! There is a post already about it, but it bears repeating: this is our last preteen year. We are savoring it.
this is the picture the night before his birthday that he always asks us to take as a memento, before he turns the next leaf
the Sunday Times
sick day at home: knitting and reading
his favorite X-Wing game, which only his tata knows how to play; it takes days to finish
how he does homework; rejects outright the idea of having his own desk
last day of uniform for this sixth-grader ever!
Last day of uniform for both during this school year:
They continued to read and write:
in the car (above) and the hotel on the way to Joshua Tree
on the way to ballet
at the dentist's office
like mother, like daughter
indulging in some light reading, given to her by Uncle Bob in response to her insistent questions about "the origins of human language"
Princess Bride: he loved that book
She continued to do ballet and ballroom dance.
She continues to cartwheel? Compulsively?
We celebrated Rado's fortieth birthday with, among other things, a trip to Sonoma (just the parents!) and a visit to that mecca of local organic food, Chez Panisse.
Rado and I were poor graduate students when we lived just a block away from Chez Panisse. The price of a meal at that restaurant was inconceivable during this stage of our lives, so it feels surreal to be able to take our whole family there. The kids got a kick out of being in a truly famous restaurant; it helps that they got served grape juice from a wine bottle.
They both love to be (very) silly:
They hug when they walk:
Our hill is still my favorite part about our house:
She played Dorothy in a Spanish rendition of her second-grade performance of The Wizard of Oz. She had 56 lines to memorize, and I never saw her *reading* them at home; she apparently memorized not only those in school, but also the lines of everybody else; during the play, she prompted other children more than once. It was, without doubt, the highlight of her school year.
with Miss Suzie, her fabulous Spanish teacher
He likes to help me cook (as does she).
She was proud of the castle she made at school--the product of several weeks of work.
Last but not least, we camped for the second time this spring and for the fourth time at Henry Coe, during Memorial Day weekend. We brought friends, including our piano teacher with her kids, who had never camped, and one of my students, who had also never camped. It was a good way to end the school year and to inaugurate the summer.
four of the best boys we know; they are going to be good good people, even after they no longer play Exploding Kittens
writers' retreat (aka: Home of the Ticks)
some pretty serious marshmallow roasting occurred
is there anything better in life than this?
early morning at camp
Sava's tent
the Crew
playing Scrabble with Laine
prepping dinner
if it looks like Levi might chop Sava's head in two, that's because this is how chopping wood looked for much of the two evenings; what is it with boys and hatchets?
a pretty much perfect marshmallow
our favorite Frog Lake
The hills are no longer green, as they were at the beginning of summer, and we are heading to new adventures. Our summer plate overfloweth.
