friday nuggets, 12/09/11: compromises, again

I've written at least twice before about my favorite Annie Dillard line.

“Wherever we go, there seems to be only one business at hand - that of finding workable compromises between the sublimity of our ideas and the absurdity of the fact of us.”
Tonight, I need to make a compromise between the sublimity of my idea about this blog--that it will capture every precious moment of my children's early lives, in both well-crafted words and artful pictures--and accept the absurdity of the following few facts: it is nearly 11 pm; we have not gone to bed before midnight all week, and we have not spent those evenings playing either; tomorrow, Saturday, we'd like to wake up at 6 am to watch a full lunar eclipse with Sava; I have almost no pictures worth sharing; Rado and I have just spent two hours talking about our kids, but certain things remain outside the purview of this blog.

So, with this promising preamble behind us, here are a few random photos, as well as (thankfully) a bunch of notes on the darnest things kids say.

On the way back from an exhausting afternoon in San Francisco, when Rado and Raya had to give us an emergency ride to the symphony because our train got caught between TWO fatal accidents on the railroad tracks, Raya started to sing "The Wheels on the Bus" and insisted that she sing by herself, while the rest of us listened quietly. No, mommy, don’t sing! I sing all by myself! She then proceeded, in her half-delirious state of exhaustion, to croon: The diapers on the bus go swish swish swish...swish swish swish...The diapers on the bus go swish swish swish, AALLLL through the town!

Sava is really fond of playing a “rhyming game” with Raya, which always goes something like this.
Hey Raya, do you want to play rhymes?
Yeah!
OK. Do house and mouse rhyme?
Yeah!
Yes. Do beast and feast rhyme?
Yeah!
OK. Do dirt and road rhyme?
Yeah!
No. Say “no” from time to time.
No amount of explaining to him that she does not understand "rhyme" yet seems to make a difference. He shrugs and says, But we like playing it!

On our way to the symphony, as we were running and panting to get into the hall on time (we did, and my phone rang the moment we stepped into the dark hall just as the music started, and someone reprimanded me loudly, Shhhhhh!), the following momentous dialogue ensued:
Mommy, I want to marry Kyle when I grow up since I can’t marry Raya.
Well, you know, that could happen. Most boys marry girls, but some boys marry boys.
I want to marry a boy.
You have to make sure Kyle wants to get married, too, though.
Yeah, he does, we’ve talked about it.
Most appropriately, we were smack in the middle of downtown San Francisco.

I had been checking Raya’s mouth for teeth earlier one day this week. In the evening, she was poking inside her mouth, and when Rado asked her what she was doing, she said:
I’m checking for new teeth, tati.
Oh, are any new ones coming?
They’re coming in a second!

When I came back after dropping off Sava at school two days ago, I found Rado still feeding Raya breakfast. He explained that he had spilled a package of pureed prunes, which Raya eats every morning, and was now feeding her a second one. Raya didn't say anything, and neither did I, but later in the morning, I overheard her walking around the kitchen, saying in a voice that clearly intended to sound like mine:
Oh, no!...Honey, you spilled some prunes!
:::
Raya is obsessed with babies. She loves her friend Phoebe's little brother, Malcie, and she really likes her new best friend, Noe, but only when Noe's mommy is around. When we had to watch Noe earlier this week for about an hour, Raya spent said hour glowering at Noe, poking her every chance she got, and acting, unabashedly, like an awful brat. As soon as Noe's mommy came back, Raya was all love and smiles again.

Then earlier tonight, she made one of her many philosophical observations on the subject of babies:

Mommy, all babies drink milk from their mommies.
Yes, and when you grow up, you can give milk to your baby, too.
Yeah, to my favorite baby!

Sava is reading better and better but continues to "hate" reading with a passion. I am allowing myself to believe that the universe will straighten this all out in good time.
:::
Off to sleep now so the lunar eclipse can have a chance. Happy weekend to all.
