nuggets, 11/11/11: time

Blog time is in short supply these days. Between kid colds, student papers, and botched naps, it is hard some days to find the mental space where truly reflective thinking happens.
I spent this week engaged in a writing exercise with my students, trying to hammer out a short piece for KQED's Perspectives series.  I wrote an essay about Raya's hemangioma, and I shared the editing and revising process with my classes. It was, in all respects, an intensely emotional experience.
I'd like to believe that this, rather than a general inability to manage my time, explains the lack of energy for writing in the space here. Back to regular programming next week. In the meantime, a bunch of photos.

Sava is really into making stuff these days. The stapler and the scotch tape are his best friends.
Yes, he is wearing an "Indian headband" made from the box of Costco frozen salmon and fake feathers.
Like most children beyond the age of two, he considers the flash of the camera an opportunity to show his "crazies."
:::
She, on the other hand, still delights in saying "cheese."
Then she loves to look at the pictures of herself.
:::
We got a new display bookshelf that absolutely rocks and that allows the kids to see and pick their books more easily than ever.
:::
Went to Stanford campus for the first time in a few weeks, and big girl scootered around it like it was her job to do so.
Big boy, on the other hand, posed inadvertently for a few pictures.
He is not always engulfed in thought, but I love capturing these moments.
His teacher called him "one in a million" last week, while his parents swelled and almost burst with pride.
:::
They are becoming ever more conspiratorial each day.
Some mischief is inevitably brewing if the distance between them is less than a foot. He whispers some crazy idea, and she complies. She shouts out some silliness, and he giggles uncontrollably.
:::
Both kids will miss grandpa when he is gone.
:::
How many pictures can you take of a two-year old girl blowing a dandelion?
Very very many.
She has the enviable capacity to enter fully into the spirit of whatever she is doing and to enjoy it effortlessly and unconditionally.
I am already anticipating the heart-breaking nostalgia that I will feel when she is no longer exactly two years old.
Heck, she is already two and a month, and I keep wishing I could turn back the clock a month.
:::
While reading books on the couch the other night, Raya kept munching on tiny bunny cookies, shoving the whole box in our faces every few minutes, and asking in a most earnest voice: Mommy, which bunny would I like from this purple box? Tati, which bunny would I like from this purple box?...Sava, would you like a bunny from this purple box?
Have I mentioned that she cracks us up?
:::
We harvested two pots of carrots this week which, albeit small, tasted delicious when roasted with some olive oil and parsley. The kids delighted in pulling them out.
:::
Happy Friday, 11/11/11. Time is precious.
