A couple of evenings ago we were all sitting at the dinner table, when Sava overheard us saying something about "studying." He turned to me and said, "Mommy, what does 'study' mean?" I was startled to realize that while he knew the meaning of "learn" very well, he had never heard us talk about"study," and for the next five minutes Rado and I took turns explaining how "studying" relates to "learning," and how "studying" is what Sava is going to do once he begins school. (Lately, we've been plagued with anxieties about how he is going to manage school, since he has no interest in group activities, and in fact actively resists them; he is probably the only child at preschool who, even months now into being part of a regular group, refuses to sing with everyone, sits on the edge of circle during circle time, etc.) After we had concluded our elaborate explanations, Sava assumed a thoughtful look for a few seconds, and then said in a most earnest voice: "Hmmm...I don't think I am going to be very good at studying."
We just about choked on our food, and then we had to bite our lips to keep from laughing.
