Yet another new set-up

We just finished day four of our new nanny experiment with a lovely woman from Ecuador, named Gabi. We chose her because she has a gentle personality, as well as a beautiful smile which I was sure Sava would find comforting; she also speaks very good English, which we put up as a requirement, because Sava will never get comfortable in school unless he understands what is going on and can make himself understood in turn. He gives every sign of liking Gabi so far, and would allow me to work undisturbed while she is here, as long as I am within reasonable distance. If I go to the bathroom or disappear in another room, he is quick to sound the alarm and immediately starts calling me. Today we all went to the Mountain View library for a children's concert, but as soon as we entered the crowded room, Sava stiffened up and started whining. By the time the singer had turned on her mike and started playing, Sava was in tears and was begging me to leave. He seems fundamentally unable to handle large crowds and loud noise. I am not sure if it's a physical sensitivity that overwhelms him emotionally, or if it's an emotional discomfort that is aggravated by sights and sounds. In any case, it is clear that we will have to learn to handle all social situations from now on with infinite patience and lots of understanding. We have ten days before we leave for Montana, and when we come back I begin work. Though I will be working part-time, we hope for a miracle that will allow me to leave him for two or three hours with Gabi without his becoming completely overwhelmed. His dad will try to be here for the first month or so of all my absences, so that at least he has him while learning to spend time alone with Gabi.
